I'm deeply inspired by how the National Literacy Trust defines literacy as "the ability to read, write, speak, and listen effectively, enabling us to navigate and comprehend the world around us." It's a definition that resonates deeply with me.
Having been raised in Winston-Salem Forsyth County and having my own children attend its public schools, I've witnessed firsthand the disparities in literacy within our community. Drawing from over a decade of experience in publishing, I felt compelled to take action. Thus, the Early Scribes program was born, aimed at empowering students facing challenges in reading and writing, while also catering to those who have a passion for reading and writing.
Through my journey as a parent, I've seen how crucial it is for children to be encouraged to write regularly, especially in genres that ignite their passion. It's through such engagement that they develop the literary skills essential for success, both in academics and in life beyond the classroom.
Together, let's continue to champion literacy in all its forms, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to unlock their full potential through the power of words.
